Sarasota officer under investigation after crashing into 8-year-old on a dirt bike
A Sarasota Police Officer is under investigation after his cruiser collided with an 8-year-old resulting in serious injuries.
According to the Sarasota Police Department (SPD), on Monday at 6:30 p.m., the officer was on duty leaving a separate call when the child entered the intersection of 22nd Street and Maple Avenue in front of the vehicle.
Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche released a video statement about the ongoing officer investigation and body cam footage of the incident on Facebook.
In the video, the officer is seen frantic when he realizes he hit the boy after making a left-hand turn. He jumped out of his cruiser and hurried to where the boy lay on the road, as a crowd quickly grew around him.
The video shows a crowd distressed and expressing their concern as the officer begins chest compressions while the boy appears unconscious in the street.
Additional officers arrive to contain the crowd as an ambulance pulls through the intersection and transports the 8-year-old boy to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital.
