Consistently excellent service

Here is an option the Phillies should consider to play first base

Aug 15, 2023

Since losing veteran Rhys Hoskins back in Spring Training, the Philadelphia Phillies have been lacking some pop from the right-side of the plate.

However, one option just became available.

The Oakland A's designated first baseman Jesús Aguilar for assignment on Monday. The 32-year old was an All-Star in 2018, when he hit 35 home runs for the Brewers.

Aguilar is due around $2 million, making it unlikely another team will pick him up. The A's have a week to explore trade possibilities and if no deal is made, he would become a free agent, making him free to sign with any team that wants his services.

He is currently hitting just .221 with five homers and nine RBI in 36 games for Oakland, but is hitting .280 with four home runs against lefties this season, which is where he would help the Phillies the most.

The Phillies are desperate to find some right-handed power and Aguilar would fit that description.

The team is currently using Alec Bohm and Kody Clemens at first. Adding Aguilar would allow him to play first base against left-handed pitching, moving Bohm back over to third. It would also give the team a powerful right-handed option off-the-bench. He could also be used as a right-handed designated hitter option.

It would essentially give Aguilar, Edmundo Sosa's at-bats, putting Sosa back in his utility role, which he is better suited to play.

In 28 career games at Citizens Bank Park, Aguilar has six home runs and 20 RBI.
