DETROIT – A man was caught with a gun when he drove a stolen go-kart to a Detroit gas station to sell it back to its original owner, officials said.
Donald Wayne Cummings is named in a criminal complaint that was filed July 26, 2024.
Detroit police said they learned July 18, 2024, that a go-kart had been stolen from a Family Dollar store.
The original owner said an advertisement for the go-kart was posted on Facebook Marketplace by Cummings.
The owner arranged to meet Cummings on July 25 at a Citgo gas station on Wyoming Avenue in Detroit to buy the go-kart for about $2,000.
Detroit police coordinated with the owner and watched the gas station during the meeting.
Cummings showed up in a stolen white van, police said. He tried to convince the other man to pick up the stolen go-kart at his house, but the man refused to travel with Cummings.
Officials said Cummings left the gas station and returned driving the go-kart. When he got out, Detroit officers tried to take him into custody.
Cummings ran toward the back of the gas station and threw a black handgun and holster behind him before jumping over a fence, according to the criminal complaint.
He ran toward a house on Esper Street and jumped over a second fence to get to the backyard, police said.
Officers told Cummings to get on the ground, and he complied.
When police picked up the handgun, they identified it as a .40-caliber Glock 23. It was loaded, they said.
Cummings was sentenced to 24 months in prison in 2023 for a gun charge. He is currently on federal supervised release and is not allowed to have a gun.
The criminal complaint concludes Cummings knowingly possessed a gun while he wasn’t allowed to do so.
